    Constructing The Wang's Log Home
    ---------
Week 1 - Log Shell Construction Phase

    The Logs Arrive

Prior to construction beginning, the log home customer will select the species of log to be used, the profile that the logs will be cut to, and the style of corner notching to be used. To construct the Wang's home, we will be using 40' to 50' long premium Western Red Cedar logs, using a vertical, flat profile (called 'slabbed' on both sided) on the sides of the logs for a contemporary look, and saddle notched corners. All of the logs used in the construction of this home will be 'slabbed to a uniform width of 8 1/2 inches, and will have hand-scribed, full length lateral notching to insure a perfect fit between the logs.

A stack of hand-peeled Western Red Cedar logs await the contsruction of the Wang's log home Here lie a few of the logs to be used in the Wang's home. THe sides have been removed, leaving a 'squared' log profile that has a uniform width of 8 1/2 inches.

    Layout Phase

During the the first few days of construction, we generally use the time to lay-out the house, setting blocks at all of the corners of the home. The blocks are adjusted for height and position to insure that the starting point of the house is flat, even, and squared precisely to the measurements in the plan. The first round is then put down, and the measurements are double checked. The following photos show the Wang's log home shell at the first round stage.
